The second round of the Manx Trials Club Championship of 2008 took place at Derbyhaven on Sunday 9 March in sunny but windy conditions. The four laps of eight sections proved more than challenging, due in part to the exceptionally high tide and inshore wind, which resulted in some of the sections having to be modified.
Club Champion Barry Kinley left the rest of the expert class all at sea with a loss of only 2 marks on the challenging expert sections. Second place was taken by new Manx resident, Nigel Sharp, with able seaman Robbie Skillicorn in third plaice. In the Clubman class young guns, Craig McGee and James Grant, had a real tussle with Craig just taking the win by three marks. Colin Scarffe fought valiantly to stay with the leaders only 3 marks adrift.
The Sportsman Class winner, Howard Sharkey, left the others in his wake, storming to a convincing win over Club Champion, Chris Keown, with Mike Stevens third.
Kevin Whiteway left the others floundering in the Twinshock class onboard his highly modified water cooled Royal Enfield. Dave Megson claimed the runner-up spot from committee member, Paul Ansermoz in third.
Tiger cub mounted, Ray Jones, won the Pre-65 Class with Andy Sykes on his trusty Bantam in runner-up spot.
Josh Brain and Tom Maddrell had a titanic battle in the Youth Expert with Josh just edging the win from Club Champion, Tom by one mark.
Mighty Joe Yeardsley had a fabulous ride cruising to a win over Club Champion, Olly Megson, in the Youth Intermediate class. With fast improving, Steve Currie, taking the last podium spot.
Both Callum Millward and Juan Lace rode well in the Youth Novice Class with Callum eventually taking the win.
The observers’ draw was won by Amanda Ansermoz who will be presented with a bottle of Bucks Fizz at the next event.
The club’s annual Awards Evening will be held on Friday 21 March at the Douglas Yacht Club. Tickets can be obtained from Julie Molyneux at £8 each.
