Nick Draper wins Manx Classic Weekend Trial 2000

The Manx Classic Weekend 2000 took place in fine weather over both days and the record entry of 170 riders enjoyed a varied selection of traditional sections. The Saturday start was re-located from the TT Grandstand to the Peveril Motorcycle Club Headquarters at Knock Froy because of the postponement of the  Senior Manx Grand Prix Race. The entry set off to a new group of sections at Douglas Head where the first marks were lost! Moving on to Port Soderick Beach they rode two classic river sections in front of an appreciative audience. The sunshine encouraged more than the usual number of spectators at all of the sections.
Last year's winner, Kevin Chapman, on the immaculate Triumph Twin, finished the day with the loss of only one mark. Unfortunately the subsequent celebrations left him a little under the weather for the next day's ride. Mick Grant (Ariel), Keith Hobson (Tiger Cub) and newcomer, Nic Draper (BSA B40) ,were on the pace with a loss of 5 and a pair of 7's respectively. Derek Brooks aboard his James was also having a tremendous ride on 10, one mark ahead of Peter Salt on the Greeves.

Sunday started from the TT Grandstand as planned, with the riders setting off in reverse order, the Italian contingent causing mayhem at the start having overslept, despite Giovanni Dughera's best efforts! Mick Grant lost a costly 5 on the first group of the day at Renscault, allowing the chasing pack to haul him in. Kevin Chapman also lost a one on the same section, but then proceeded to lose four on the next group at Ballamoddha farm and a further 5 marks at Tholt y Will effectively putting him out of contention. Meanwhile, Nic Draper, son of John Draper, was having a storming ride, losing only 2 marks, one at Tholt y Will and one at Cluggid Gate, for the morning and staying clean for the entire afternoon. This outstanding ride saw Nic overtake three of his rivals to win the covetted Manx Premier Classic Award.

The Clubman route was led from start to finish by Stan Cordingley on the James. It was nice to see Stan back on the island having been a regular competitor in the Manx National Two Day Trial for many years. Stan lost 19 marks on the Saturday and only 5 on the Sunday to consolidate his position at the top of the tree. Joe Morgan (James) also had an excellent Sunday ride, losing only 7 marks to take him from fifth overnight to runner-up spot. Roger Feather (Ariel) had a steady ride maintaining third place on both days.
David Emmott (Triumph Trophy) went on to retain the Telefork Rigid Class Trophy with an excellent performance in fifth place overall on the clubman route. Ian Watkins (AJS) was only six marks adrift after a brilliant Sunday ride saw him gain 8 places moving up from 18th overnight to 10th overall.

Simon Chell (Ariel) won the Abbotswood Trophy for the under 35 years Pre-65 class, but has to wait a further three years to have a crack at the main award!

The Twinshock class was won by local man John Kneale on his Fantic after a tremendous tussle with his brother-in-law, Paul Knight, both riders being on 9 marks lost overnight, but John getting the edge by one mark on Sunday. Newcomer, Bob Gent, was only three marks behind to take third spot.

The least marks lost all weekend went to the under 35 Twinshock class winner, Juan Knight, on the Ossa who went clean on Saturday and dropped only two marks on the Sunday. Newcomers, David and Steve Postlethwaite, were very much on the pace, on their Yamahas, to take second and third places in the class.

The event has been very well supported this year and the Committee thank the competitors for their enthusiasm. We are constantly looking at ways to improve the trial and would be grateful to receive constructive comments on how, with your help, we can make the event even better.
